New York Counties
New York has 62 counties, each with its own sheriff's office or county police department that maintains police records. In New York City, the five boroughs (Bronx, Kings, New York, Queens, and Richmond) are served by the NYPD. Nassau, Suffolk, and Westchester counties operate county police departments rather than traditional sheriff patrol divisions. All other counties rely on their sheriff's office for county-level law enforcement. Police records are available through FOIL requests submitted to the appropriate agency.
